The following system is used to rate the hikes and walks. The Red River Gorge does not have significant elevation change, so elevation change is not a factor used when rating the hikes.
Walks – All walks are less than 1 mile, and are considered easy. There are 2 unmarked walks that would be a good opportunity to begin experiencing unmarked trails.
Hikes – All hikes are greater than 1 mile.
Easy Hikes – Less than 5.0 miles following official trails. If a hike is on an unofficial trail it is automatically upgraded to a Moderate Hike.
Moderate Hikes – Between 5.0 miles – 8.0 miles. The hike may or may not be on unofficial trails for part or all of the hike.
Difficult Hikes – Greater than 8.0 miles. The hike may or may not be on unofficial trails for part or all of the hike.
Unofficial Trails – The Red River Gorge area has countless unofficial trails. Unofficial trails have been created over the years by the users of Red River Gorge, not the forest service. These are rarely marked on topographical maps and rarely have signage. Many of these trails are very well used and lead to popular locations making them easier to find and follow. Others are difficult to find or are not really trails at all but rather you will be making your own trail through the forest. Please read the descriptions carefully, and know your skills and limits.
